Barry Steinhart Deputy Director of Legislation | State of California DMV
More than 18.1 million Californians have obtained a REAL ID, marking an increase of 126,782 from September 2024, as reported by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The federal enforcement deadline for requiring a REAL ID or another federally approved document to fly within the U.S. or enter secure federal facilities is set for May 7, 2025.
Californians are encouraged to apply for their REAL ID now to avoid last-minute issues and ensure stress-free travel. The application process begins online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov, where applicants can fill out the form and upload necessary documents. A visit to a DMV office is required to complete the application by bringing the uploaded documents. This process is expected to take about 15 minutes in-office if started online.
Applicants must provide proof of identity with one original or certified document such as a valid passport or birth certificate. If there has been a legal name change, relevant documents like marriage certificates or adoption papers are needed. Two paper copies proving California residency, such as utility bills or bank statements, are also required along with a Social Security number.
The DMV has expanded its digital services to minimize the need for office visits. Many tasks can be completed online, including eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. Customers can utilize the Service Advisor on the DMV website to explore available options for completing DMV-related tasks.
For those interested in paperless vehicle registration and driver’s license renewal notices, signing in or creating a secure online account at dmv.ca.gov is necessary before opting in.
