Governor Gavin Newsom has announced special elections for California's Senate District 36 and Assembly District 32, scheduled for April 29, 2025. The primary elections will take place on February 25, 2025.

In the proclamation, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of reforming California's mental health system. "This is the biggest reform of the California mental health system in decades and will finally equip partners to deliver the results all Californians need and deserve," he stated. He added that treatment centers would focus more on mental health and substance use support within communities.

The proclamation details the necessity for these special elections following a vacancy in both legislative bodies. For Assembly District 32, a new State Assembly Member will be elected, while Senate District 36 will seek a replacement for Senator Janet Nguyen after her resignation.

Governor Newsom officially signed this proclamation on December 10, 2024, with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting to it.
