President Biden has swiftly approved a Major Disaster Declaration for the Los Angeles area, following a request from Governor Gavin Newsom. This declaration aims to bolster ongoing response efforts to combat major wildfires affecting the region.

Governor Newsom and President Biden were briefed by emergency officials on the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires at a Santa Monica fire station. The declaration provides federal assistance funding to help state, tribal, and local governments manage emergency response costs. It also includes Individual Assistance programs for affected residents and businesses, offering temporary accommodation and financial aid for property damage.

Significant support is being provided through the U.S. Forest Service, which includes five large air tankers, 10 helicopters, and numerous engines.

"The situation in Los Angeles is highly dangerous and rapidly evolving. President Biden’s swift action is a huge lift for California — as we throw everything we can into protecting residents with substantial state, local and federal resources. To all those in Southern California, please continue to listen to local authorities and don’t wait; evacuate if asked," stated Governor Gavin Newsom.

The state began monitoring this weather event closely over the weekend and started prepositioning resources on Sunday. Governor Newsom has maintained constant communication with officials at all levels of government to ensure an aggressive response to these fires while keeping resources ready for any new outbreaks.

Governor Newsom has also secured three Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAGs) from FEMA for the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires. These grants are essential in ensuring vital resources are available to suppress the fires effectively.

Yesterday, Governor Newsom visited Pacific Palisades to meet with fire officials directly involved in managing the Palisades Fire. During his visit, he declared a state of emergency to provide additional support to impacted communities.
