The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has made significant progress in its operation to address crime and enhance public safety in San Bernardino. Within the first two weeks, 64 arrests have been made, 11 stolen vehicles recovered, and five illegal firearms seized. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the state to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies across California.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed optimism about the operation's early results, stating, "In just two weeks, the CHP surge in San Bernardino has taken aggressive action to arrest over 60 criminal suspects and take illegal firearms off the streets. I am encouraged by the quick progress we’ve seen, and hope the continued CHP presence and partnership here offers an improved sense of safety throughout the community."
San Bernardino faces a violent crime rate nearly double that of the statewide average and a homicide rate more than three times higher. Vehicle theft remains a significant issue in the city as well. Mayor Helen Tran acknowledged the positive impact of this collaboration: "We appreciate the recently formed partnership between the California Highway Patrol and the City of San Bernardino Police Department," she said. "In just two weeks, this local and state collaboration has demonstrated successful results to make our community safer."
The operation involves additional CHP personnel targeting property theft and violent crime, including gun violence. Special law enforcement units are deployed on land and air to address sideshow activities and recover stolen vehicles.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee praised his team's efforts: "I am incredibly grateful for the dedication and hard work of our team and partners in this ongoing crime suppression operation," he said. The CHP also provides investigative support to disrupt organized criminal activity.
Recent examples of their work include apprehending a felon with a loaded firearm on November 9th, assisting in capturing a suspect involved in a stabbing incident on November 9th, and pursuing a home invasion suspect from Los Angeles on November 10th.
This operation is part of broader statewide efforts by CHP which have resulted in over 3,400 arrests since inception. Governor Newsom's administration has invested heavily in public safety initiatives since 2019, including historic funding levels aimed at combating organized retail theft.
