Bend, Oregon, is emerging as a popular destination for both outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a balanced lifestyle. The city, known for its scenic beauty and vibrant cultural scene, has become a favored spot for skiers and non-skiers alike.
Heather L. Wells of Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty highlighted the appeal of Bend's diverse activities: “For some, it’s the ability to ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon,” she said. Others appreciate "enjoying a quiet evening with views of the Cascade Mountains from their back deck.”
Grant Ludwick, managing partner at the Agency Bend, described Bend as “very hip,” attracting affluent Californians who either retire or work remotely. He also noted that “we do have world-class medical facilities due to being such an active [and athletic] community.”
The city's real estate market reflects its desirability. According to Ludwick, Bend often ranks as Oregon's most expensive city with average home prices around $750,000. The luxury market starts at $2 million and can exceed $4 million.
Wells explained that families often pass down homes through generations: “It’s not uncommon to meet people whose families have lived in Bend since the days of the Oregon Trail.”
Beyond skiing, Bend offers a range of activities including exploring its well-known breweries along the Bend Ale Trail. This trail features over 30 breweries and tasting rooms offering various brews and events throughout November.
“After a day on the slopes, locals and visitors alike gather at the breweries along the trail to warm up and unwind," Wells stated.
Deschutes Brewery is among Bend's most prominent breweries, alongside others like Boneyard Beer and Crux Fermentation Project.
Dining options are varied in Bend with restaurants such as Bos Taurus steakhouse and Arianna serving New American cuisine. Outdoor attractions include fly fishing on Deschutes River and climbing at Smith Rock.
The Old Mill District provides shopping opportunities within historic mill buildings while cultural venues like Hayden Homes Amphitheater host live events.
Skiers can enjoy Mount Bachelor with its 4,300 skiable acres just 20 miles from Bend. Ludwick mentioned that “the terrain is gentle and accessible to all abilities.” Mount Hood also offers year-round skiing opportunities about two hours away.
In summary, Wells emphasized that it's this combination of outdoor activities and cultural experiences that makes Bend attractive: “You can spend the morning skiing or hiking...and finish the day with live music or a meal at one of our amazing restaurants.”
