With the presidential election approaching, voters are keenly interested in candidates' positions on significant issues such as inflation and immigration. However, a recent interview with vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz has brought an unexpected topic to light: gutters.

In an interview with SubwayTakes, Walz stated, “The most neglected part of homeownership is the gutters. It’s personal for me.” This comment elicited surprise and amusement from many viewers.

Chris Counahan, president of LeafFilter gutter protection company, commented on Walz's statement: “I was as surprised as anyone that Walz is so passionate about gutters, but he’s right—gutters are often the forgotten part of the home. It’s about time gutters get their moment in the sun.”

Walz shared his personal experiences with gutter maintenance issues. “I’ve had problems with gutters before,” he admitted. “You get your basement wet. You get ice dams. It causes a lot of problems.” He emphasized the importance of preventing these issues through regular maintenance.

Counahan explained the significance of gutter cleaning: “Gutter cleaning is crucial because it prevents the buildup of debris like leaves and dirt, ensuring proper water flow.” He warned that clogged gutters could lead to severe damage to a home's roof, foundation, and walls and increase mold growth risk.

“If gutters are not cleaned regularly and water overflows from the gutters, it can fall along the foundation of your home, freeze, and result in cracks,” Counahan added. The resulting foundational damage could cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair.

Walz also recommended using "gutter helmets" or guards to cover gutters and prevent clogs. “It covers it and lets water go through and keeps it out of your house,” he said.

Counahan supported this advice: “Gutter guards deter critters like raccoons, birds, and squirrels from nesting in your gutters. They also eliminate the need for homeowners to climb ladders to clean gutters, which is incredibly dangerous.”

Routine maintenance every six months or after high winds or storms is essential for protecting a home's foundation and long-term value amid increasing weather-related issues.

Walz concluded by saying that well-maintained gutters reflect positively on homeowners: “I try not to be judgmental on people,” he said. “But when I see a well-tended gutter, it says a lot about somebody.”
