California to establish over 250 new recycling sites across 30 counties
SACRAMENTO — California is set to enhance its recycling infrastructure with the introduction of more than 250 new recycling sites across 30 counties, funded by recycling innovation awards.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced CalRecycle’s allocation of nearly $70 million in Beverage Container Redemption Innovation Grants. These grants will support projects incorporating advanced recycling methods such as reverse vending machines, mobile recycling, and bag-drop sites statewide, including underserved counties like Butte, Imperial, Mendocino, Merced, and Modoc.
"California is taking bold action to transform our recycling systems and reduce the waste filling our landfills and polluting the environment. These modernized recycling sites will make it easier for Californians in every corner of the state to help create a more sustainable and resilient future for our communities and the planet," stated Governor Gavin Newsom.
Supermarket chains Save Mart and Smart & Final are set to receive over $2 million each for installing reverse vending machines in 19 counties.
California is also implementing various reforms aimed at increasing beverage container recycling and easing redemption processes for consumers. Residents can now redeem wine, liquor, and large juice containers for cash. New retailer takeback rules starting next year will expand beverage recycling options in areas lacking a dedicated recycling center.
Additionally, the state is investing in programs supporting recycling infrastructure, innovation, and accessibility through additional Redemption Innovation grants, Beverage Container Quality Infrastructure grants, and Reusable Beverage Container Recycling Infrastructure grants.
Earlier this year, California released draft regulations for the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act (SB 54), signed by Governor Newsom. This legislation mandates producers to reduce single-use plastic waste and ensure their product packaging is recyclable or compostable.
