California's new legislation aimed at curbing retail crime and property theft has garnered strong support from local elected leaders, business representatives, and law enforcement officials. Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed the laws, which have been described as the most significant bipartisan effort in California's history to address property crime.
Rachel Michelin, President and CEO of the California Retailers Association, praised the legislative package: “Cal Retailers applauds the Governor for continuing to lead on the issue of Organized Retail Crime... Newsom’s legislative package addressing ORC and property crimes announced today is yet another huge step in the right direction.”
Ronald Fong, President and CEO of the California Grocers Association, also expressed approval: “Thanks to the leadership of Governor Newsom and legislative leaders, California has taken a significant step forward in combatting retail theft... We look forward to partnering with the Governor and Legislature as California continues its fight against rampant retail theft.”
Tracy Hernandez, CEO of BizFed & New California Coalition, commented on the collaborative effort behind the legislation: “We applaud the hard work of business, labor, law enforcement, and civic leaders who leaned in together to advance landmark legislation signed by Governor Gavin Newsom that holistically addresses retail crime and property theft with stronger enforcement and serious penalties.”
Rodney Fong from the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce noted that these new laws are crucial for public safety: “Governor Newsom’s commitment to cracking down on retail crime... is a significant step forward for our communities and businesses.”
Leah Toeniskoetter from the San Jose Chamber of Commerce highlighted how this legislation impacts local economies: “Retail theft is a serious issue that not only impacts... businesses but also threatens jobs... This new legislation is a positive step toward addressing these challenges.”
Law enforcement officials echoed similar sentiments. Sheriff Robert G. Luna from Los Angeles County stated: “This welcomed legislative package targeting retail crime... provides law enforcement crucial tools to hold habitual offenders accountable.” Sheriff Bob Jonsen from Santa Clara County emphasized that tougher penalties are necessary for repeat offenders.
Local elected officials also supported Governor Newsom's initiative. Mayor Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento remarked: "We can hold retail theft perpetrators fully accountable while not going backwards." Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson from Riverside added: "These laws will ensure that our businesses and residents can thrive knowing that criminals will be held accountable."
The new laws aim to provide stricter penalties for repeat offenders involved in organized retail crime (ORC) and enhance tools available for felony prosecutions. They permit police officers to arrest suspects based on probable cause even if they did not witness a crime directly. Additionally, they create new penalties for those damaging businesses during thefts.
The consensus among various stakeholders indicates broad support for these measures aimed at enhancing public safety across California.
