U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-08) has issued a statement in response to the release of the Continuing Resolution (CR). In his statement, he criticized House Republicans for their actions regarding the funding of the government and disaster relief for California.

Garamendi stated, "House Republicans at the order of Elon Musk and Donald Trump, torpedoed a bipartisan and bicameral deal that would have funded the government and provided much needed disaster relief to California communities." He expressed concern over what he described as a replacement with "a one-sided scheme to grease the skids for a $2 trillion tax cut for wealthy billionaires."

According to Garamendi, there was no negotiation or discussion with Democratic leadership about this bill. He warned that suspending the debt limit could allow for significant tax cuts benefiting the super wealthy, which would increase the deficit.

He further claimed, "Let me be clear: we had a deal, but Elon Musk and Donald Trump killed it." Garamendi accused House Republicans of attempting to push through legislation aimed at providing substantial tax cuts just before government funding is set to expire.

Garamendi referred to these developments as part of what he termed a "Trump-Musk shutdown," describing it as both a political failure and an attempt to benefit wealthy donors. He criticized House Republicans for not collaborating across party lines and prioritizing interests unrelated to everyday Americans' well-being.

He posed a choice for Republicans: "Will they stand with the American people, or will they continue to dance to the tune of billionaire puppet masters?" Garamendi called on them to accept an original bipartisan agreement and focus on governance that benefits all citizens.

"The American people deserve better than this," he concluded.
