Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement following the California Public Utilities Commission's (CPUC) approval of a plan to reduce reliance on the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility in Southern California. Newsom emphasized the need to close Aliso Canyon without causing financial strain on working families due to rising utility bills.

"Aliso Canyon must be closed for good, but without harming working families with skyrocketing utility bills," said Newsom. He acknowledged that progress in reducing reliance on the facility has been slower than desired but expressed support for the CPUC's plan. "The Public Utilities Commission — a constitutionally independent agency — has set out a reasonable path that protects residents near the facility and doesn’t throw the natural gas market into chaos."

Newsom stressed that it would be "reckless and irresponsible" to impose significant price increases on families without ensuring energy reliability. He noted that new triggers based on natural gas demand, as established by the Commission, will guide decisions regarding Aliso Canyon's closure.

Addressing local concerns, Newsom assured nearby communities of their safety, stating, "To the communities surrounding Aliso Canyon, I hear you. Your safety is paramount." He highlighted efforts made with local and federal partners to ensure safety through new protocols and rigorous testing.

The governor reiterated California's commitment to transitioning from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy sources. "Our state is moving away from fossil fuels and toward clean and renewable energy," he stated. While acknowledging past achievements, he underscored the ongoing work required to permanently close Aliso Canyon: "Together, we can get it done."
