This week, Representative John Garamendi joined fellow Representatives Crow, Dean, and Houlahan in signing a letter to the Biden Administration. The letter requests an assessment of Israel's compliance with its March 2024 assurances to facilitate U.S. humanitarian assistance to Gaza. These assurances align with National Security Memorandum 20 and Section 620I of the Foreign Assistance Act.
Representative Garamendi expressed support for an October 13th communication from the Biden Administration to the Israeli government. The message urged Israel to increase humanitarian aid into Gaza within 30 days or face potential restrictions on access to U.S. weapons. Despite this deadline having passed, Garamendi noted that Israel has not yet met its obligations regarding aid facilitation.
"The U.S. must always evaluate whether the provision of military aid is in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, especially those that prohibit the obstruction of humanitarian access," said Garamendi. He emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of Israel’s adherence to relevant U.S. policies and laws.
Garamendi reiterated his concerns about inadequate humanitarian assistance in Gaza and his earlier request for enforcement of NSM-20 made in a May letter to the administration.
"Now is the time for more humanitarian aid and support to the innocent civilians impacted by this war, not less," he stated, advocating further actions ensuring Israel upholds its commitments from March 2024.
He voiced support for ongoing efforts by President Biden's administration aimed at achieving a negotiated resolution that ends hostilities, frees hostages, increases humanitarian relief, and supports rebuilding efforts under a legitimate Palestinian governing body.
