Governor Gavin Newsom has declared November 17-23, 2024, as "Apprenticeship Week" in California. This announcement aligns with the 10th anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week and emphasizes the importance of apprenticeships as a career pathway contributing to the state's prosperity.
Governor Newsom stated, "As we mark the 10th anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week, California joins employers, workers, educators and other partners in uplifting apprenticeships as a vital career pathway that is key to the prosperity and vitality of our state."
The governor highlighted that since 2018, nearly 191,000 individuals have completed state-registered apprenticeship programs. This progress supports California's objective to serve half a million apprentices by 2029. The state has allocated over $221 million in the last fiscal year towards initiatives that align industry needs with workforce development.
To address barriers faced by young people in employment and education, the California Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship (COYA) grant provided $31 million this year. This funding aids their transition into high-demand careers through pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs.
Additionally, efforts are being made to increase diversity within the construction industry through the Equal Representation in Construction Apprenticeship grant. Governor Newsom invites Californians to explore these opportunities and support future skilled workers.
The proclamation was signed on November 15, 2024, by Governor Gavin Newsom and attested by Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber.
