Small towns in the United States are seeing a resurgence as more Americans leave metropolitan areas. Researchers from the University of Virginia reported that in 2023, approximately 291,400 people relocated to smaller towns or rural regions with populations under 250,000. This trend is largely driven by individuals aged 25 to 44 seeking a quieter lifestyle and more neighborly environments.
In Hesperia, California, about 80 miles from Los Angeles, a new community named Silverwood is being developed with an emphasis on fostering kindness among its residents. John Ohanian, the general manager of Silverwood, stated that residents will sign a "kindness pledge" upon moving in. The pledge aims to set expectations for community engagement and helpfulness.
Ohanian believes this initiative addresses current societal divisions: “We believe that parents want their children to grow up in a place where they are safe and valued.” Inspired by Tom Tait's efforts as Anaheim's former mayor to promote kindness, Silverwood plans to integrate similar values into its community structure.
Silverwood will feature "Village Greens" for social gatherings and "The Crest Club," which includes amenities like a pool and pickleball courts. The development prioritizes walkability with extensive trails and parks. It spans over 9,366 acres and will eventually include various housing options.
The first phase of homes will offer 646 units equipped with solar panels, ranging from mid-$400,000s to $700,000s. Sales are expected to start in early 2025. Homeowners association fees will be $158 monthly.
Savannah Routh from Adelanto is eager to move into Silverwood due to its focus on kindness: “It sets a positive tone and encourages people to be more thoughtful." She hopes for strong community bonds similar to those she experienced growing up.
Routh suggests other cities adopt Silverwood’s approach: “It doesn’t take much to be kind, but it can have a big impact on how people feel about where they live.”
