In a recent announcement, Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the ongoing efforts of California's Organized Retail Crime Task Force, led by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), in combating organized retail theft across the state. The task force has made significant strides this year with 621 investigations resulting in 1,123 arrests and the recovery of 269,992 stolen items valued at $8.1 million.
Governor Newsom stated, "California will continue to hold thieves accountable — helping to ensure the state’s historic low crime rates remain that way. I thank the California Highway Patrol for their work with local agencies throughout the state to protect our communities and businesses."
Since its establishment in 2019, the task force has conducted over 3,000 investigations leading to 3,223 arrests and recovering more than 880,276 stolen goods worth nearly $46 million.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee praised his team’s efforts: “The California Highway Patrol commends our retail theft investigation teams for their exceptional work in dismantling organized theft rings and protecting businesses across the state. They prevent significant losses and ensure that those who target retailers are brought to justice. Their dedication, skill, and teamwork are critical in keeping our communities and economy safe.”
In September alone, CHP recovered 1,995 stolen items valued at over $306,553.
This initiative is part of Governor Newsom’s broader strategy against organized retail crime which includes new measures to address property crime and substantial funding for police and prosecutors in local areas.
Recently enacted legislation aims to impose stricter penalties on repeat offenders while providing additional resources for felony prosecutions against serial shoplifters and other offenders.
Governor Newsom has invested $1.1 billion since 2019 towards enhancing public safety by supporting local law enforcement hiring efforts. Last year alone saw $267 million distributed among 55 local agencies aiding them in tackling organized retail crime more effectively.
In just six months of grant cycles from these funds, law enforcement reported over 6,900 arrests related to retail theft and other offenses.
Additionally, CHP reported a significant increase in proactive operations targeting organized retail crime last year with special operations being conducted statewide to bolster public safety.
