Coleen Solomon Field Operations Deputy Director | State of California DMV
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced the reopening of its Gilroy office on October 14. Located at 6984 Automall Parkway, the office will open its doors again after being closed since July 2 for renovations. The upgrades include new flooring and furniture, along with other improvements.
Local residents are encouraged to use this opportunity to apply for a REAL ID. "Starting May 7, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will require a valid passport or other federally approved documents, like a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card, to board flights within the United States and access secure federal facilities and military bases," the DMV noted.
To minimize wait times at the office, individuals are advised to visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov beforehand. They can fill out the online application, upload necessary documents, and print their confirmation code. Bringing these documents and the code to the DMV will help finalize transactions quickly—usually in less than 10 minutes at a service window.
The DMV also emphasizes trying online services before visiting an office. Most tasks can be completed digitally without an in-person visit. This includes various self-service transactions that are no longer available at physical locations. Customers are urged to explore online services and other channels for completing tasks such as driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals.
For those interested in receiving paperless renewal notices for vehicle registration and driver’s licenses, signing into a MyDMV account or creating one at dmv.ca.gov/mydmv is necessary. Once logged in, customers can opt into this service.
