Governor Newsom signs multiple legislative bills across various sectors

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the signing of several bills into law today, covering a range of issues from seismic safety in hospitals to artificial intelligence.

Among the signed bills are AB 869 by Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg) addressing hospital seismic safety compliance, and AB 1008 by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) focusing on personal information under the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018.

Newsom also approved AB 1034 by Assemblymember Tim Grayson (D-Concord), which exempts construction industry employees from certain provisions of the Labor Code Private Attorneys General Act of 2004. Additionally, AB 1137 by Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. (D-Los Angeles) was signed, concerning excluded employees.

The Governor signed legislation impacting various sectors including mental health with AB 1282 by Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), which addresses social media impacts on mental health, and AB 1936 by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside), which mandates maternal mental health screenings.

In education, AB 1575 by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) regarding student codes of conduct in public postsecondary education was enacted. Another significant bill is AB 1871 by Assemblymember Juan Alanis (R-Modesto), which introduces personal financial literacy into the social sciences curriculum for grades 7 to 12.

Several bills aimed at improving healthcare were also signed, such as AB 2063 by Assemblymember Brian Maienschein (D-San Diego) on healthcare coverage and SB 1120 by Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park) related to utilization review in healthcare coverage.

Governor Newsom also vetoed several bills including AB 1168 by Assemblymember Steve Bennett (D-Ventura) concerning prehospital emergency medical services and SB 85 by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) related to immigration case management and social services. Each vetoed bill has an accompanying message explaining the decision.
