As Hurricane Helene nears Georgia, Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King has advised residents to take several precautions before the storm hits.
“Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast as a major hurricane and continue into Georgia with devastating wind speeds,” said Commissioner King. “Because these damaging winds can affect areas hundreds of miles away from the expected trajectory, all Georgians should begin preparing for the storm.”
Residents are encouraged to make a list of all covered items such as furniture, electronics, appliances, and valuables. It is recommended to keep an electronic copy of this list, including pictures. Additionally, documenting property damage caused by Hurricane Idalia, such as broken windows and damaged roofs, is essential.
Commissioner King advises notifying insurance companies immediately about any damages. Significant or permanent repairs should not be attempted by homeowners; however, if safe to do so, temporary measures like covering roofs with tarps or boarding up broken windows can be taken.
Receipts should be saved for potential insurance claims. Residents are also warned to beware of scammers and be cautious of unsolicited repair offers from contractors. Suspicious behavior includes contractors who rush decisions or claim government endorsement.
