Late real estate mogul Brandon Miller's wife, Candice, is being sued for nearly $195,000 over unpaid rent on the family's $49,000-a-month New York City apartment. This legal action comes two months after her husband died by suicide.
Brandon Miller passed away in July near the couple’s Hamptons home while his wife and children were vacationing in Europe. Reports later revealed that he had accumulated close to $34 million in personal debts leading up to his death.
The couple still owned their Water Mill, NY home at the time of Brandon's death but had given up their $9 million Tribeca apartment in 2021. They subsequently moved into a rented apartment on New York’s Upper East Side.
Mak Acquisitions, the landlord of that property, has filed a lawsuit against Candice Miller, 42, seeking to recover unpaid rent from April to July. According to the New York Post, rent was $47,000 for April and May before increasing to $49,000 for June and July. Although Candice vacated the property at the end of August and owes only $2,000 for that month due to her security deposit being retained by the landlord, Mak Acquisitions is seeking a total of $194,881.
This lawsuit adds to a series of legal actions against Candice following her husband's passing. Shortly after his death, bridge lender Titan Capital sued her over missed payments on a $1 million mortgage on their Hamptons home—the location where Brandon was found unresponsive in his Porsche Carrera on June 30. He died in a Southampton hospital on July 3 after leaving a suicide note indicating his intention to take his own life.
Six weeks after Brandon's death, Candice listed their seven-bedroom Hamptons home for sale at $15.5 million. Legal documents filed by Candice as part of an August bond petition reveal that Brandon had four outstanding loans on the home, including a $2 million mortgage from Titan Capital.
Candice is currently living with her two daughters in a $10 million Miami apartment owned by socialite and businessman Alexander von Furstenberg. The property is believed to have been offered by Alex’s wife Alison von Furstenberg due to her close friendship with Candice.
Brandon also had other significant debts: an additional $800,000 loan from Titan Capital; loans with UBS and Stevens Financial Group; an $11.3 million loan from BMO Bank; a $6.1 million loan from financier Donald Jaffe; as well as owing American Express and Funding Club amounts totaling approximately half a million dollars combined.
At the time of his death, Brandon reportedly assured his wife that their finances were under control before she left for Italy with their children—a trip during which he made his fatal suicide attempt.
