Berkshire Hathaway finished No. 1 on a ranking of most profitable U.S. insurers, posting annual profits of $81.4 billion last year, according to a tally by the financial services website HowMuch.net.

The analysis, which is based on Fortune 500 data, indicated that 15 property and casualty insurers surpassed $1 billion in 2019 profits. The numbers do not include surplus or reserve funds.

The average profit level among the 50 companies stood at $3.2 billion, according to the analysis. In the second and third spots were MetLife ($5.9 billion) and State Farm ($5.6 billion).

The study shows that there are numerous insurance companies making less than $1 billion in annual profits, suggesting that the insurance markets are generally very competitive while providing low prices for consumers, according to HowMuch.net.
