Maryland residents pay the highest average property insurance premiums in the nation – $1,212 per year – according to a new analysis published by the financial news website Business Insider.
Virginia’s average premium was the second highest at $1,181, with Delaware coming third at $1,172. Ohio residents pay the lowest annual property insurance rates at $895, Business Insider reporter.
The study is based on a report from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners using 2017 data – the most recent available. The national average cost of a premium was $1,211, reflecting a 1.6% rise over the previous year’s numbers.
The cost of property insurance premiums depends on factors such as overall real estate values within individual states, as well as whether properties are subject to acts of nature such as earthquakes, tornadoes or water damage caused by hurricanes.
